On April 19th over thirty Mascoma Ceramic students traveled to Colby Sawyer College in New London to take part in an outdoor Raku firing. The workshop was led by Professor Jon Keenan, an expert in East Asian art, ceramics and Raku. Raku is a type of Japanese pottery traditionally used in tea ceremonies originating in the 16th century. Students created their forms and bisque fired them at school, and then learned about the process and special glazes in the ceramics studio at Colby Sawyer. Student’s work emerged from the outdoor kiln with metallic lusters and various unique colors. Students toured the Juried Student Exhibition, heard from graduating senior artists and had a tour of the campus. Students were also treated to a delicious complimentary lunch at the dining hall.
